Save Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black)

Love this player. It has everything you could want, it's easy to use, and you can put practically your whole computer on it. My only problem with this player is the headphones that came in the package .... they are not good at all. I switched to a cheap pair of JVC's and the sound is amazing. Battery lasts a very long time ... I work 12 hours a day and I have this player on virtually the whole time and still have half of a battery when the day is done. Well worth the price except for the cheap headphones.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

I purchased the 120 GB about 9 months ago, having upgraded from the 80 GB Zune that I owned prior. Let me start this review by saying that I really wanted to love this thing, but, the passage of time has proven otherwise. I'll try to make this short and sweet:

Pros:
- Form factor of the Zune device
- Build quality
- Great screen
- Very good audio quality
- Reasonable, not great battery life

Cons:
- Proprietary Zune PC software
- Battery life could be better
- Zune software forces you to use the device the way Microsoft 'thinks' you should use it -- no exceptions
- Proprietary USB and power cable

I have a very large music collection, consisting of vinyl LPs, CDs, and digital audio files (MP3, FLAC, APE, etc). The Zune software INSISTS on doing things it's way -- if you have your own album art, if the ID3 tags aren't perfect, GOOD LUCK. The player will not allow you to display your catalog in a hierarchical folder list, which is how I have my music organized. Furthermore, the software will not play the tracks in the correct order if the ID3 tags have errors or are not in the exact format the Zune expects. After months of trying to manually fix my collection to make the Zune happy, I gave up and started creating playlists to force the Zune to play what I want, in the order that I wanted. This also takes a lot of time -- by now, my patience started running a little thin. I bought this thing to be convenient for ME, not Microsoft. The battery indicator displays a full charge until the battery is about 20 minutes from being completely dead. I've had it die unexpectedly on numerous occasions, for this reason. Due to the unit being completely locked down, you cannot use it as a USB host -- ie: you cannot use it as an external drive. The video playback works well enough, and the screen is awesome, but the Zune is very picky as to file formats and resolutions. If you do not convert files to conform to these requirements (time consuming), the player will either a) not recognize the files, or b) recognize but not play the files. Figuring this out will also take lots of your free time -- which we all have a lot of, according to Microsoft. After a while, you will give up completely, as I did.

I have been using my Zune primarily as a portable music machine, mostly in my car for commuting. With all of the problems I've had organizing, syncing, and playing my music, I have reached the point of looking around for another player. The form factor of the unit itself is really nice -- it's the perfect size, it's really well made, the screen is gorgeous, but the software is, quite frankly, typical MS garbage. You would think that the largest software maker in the world would have figured out by now how to make usable software -- go figure. I sent them an email regarding my problems, and received an automated reply, with no follow-up. Seems like the feeling is mutual -- I'm tired of them as much as they're tired of me. As with most relationships, it's important to know when it's time to move on.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

I have an 8 GB zune and a 120 GB zune and I love them both. I have had Ipods in the past but I love the Zune because of the larger screen. I have over 35 movies on my 120 GB Zune and about 30 music albums and I still have 70 GB of space left. It is a bit difficult to get used to if you've never used one before becuase it does not come with a user manual and so you have to look at the forum online if you have questions. The earbuds that it comes with are really uncomfortable so you should get different ones if you don't already have them. And I would recommend getting a case that covers the screen so you don't get smudges on it. I love it though and it is perfect for me. I would recommend a large one if you want to put movies on it and a small one if you are only going to put music on it.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

While I no longer own this item due to an untimely, accidental crushing of the screen which resulted in it being completely unusable, this Zune model had me blown away in the month that I did have it. Having owned 2 iPod Nanos (1st & 3rd generation) and the Video (5th Generation), I can honestly say without bias that Microsoft's product is the better buy. The quality headphones. The wireless syncing. The lack of frozen screen episodes and inclusion of stellar battery life. The radio. I especially like the interface of the software better compared to iTunes. It's much easier adding the files you want. Definitely buying a new one when I save up. Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

Buying Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black)

i owned the original zune 30 then bought an ipod 80 then chose to go back to the zune 120 for a few reasons. 1. i listen to FM radio and the ipod didnt have one. 2 i watch video podcasts and the screen on the zune is WAY better for watching video than the ipods screen given that its much bigger and widescreen. 3 the zune pass is THE best way to get music online. the catalog is just as big as itunes, only you can download all you want for $15/mo. (it should be said that whatever you download is DRM'ed and if yu cancel your subscription you wont be able to play anything you downloaded. except that you can keep 10 songs a month that arent DRM'ed.)

given that, i am very happy with my purchase. there is plenty of room for my entire music collection, i download every new album the day it comes out and never have to pick and choose what to put on or not.
the player itself is a bit on the big side, taller and thicker than the ipods but it does have a bigger screen. the battery life is good, i listen maybe 12hrs a day and never run out. the player interface is simple to use, very intuitive and easy to pick right up and use. the touch pad could be a bit more responsive but that is a small detail.

the zune software is a real big plus. its awesome when it comes to playing and discovering new stuff. the "smart dj" is simmilar to the "genious" playlist feature in itunes only it seems to do a better job at picking songs based on the song you use as the basis for it. the "now playing" screen cycles pictures of whatever artists music is playing and looks great. like i said before, the marketplace is great, full of new and old music.

it isnt to say there isnt a few drawbacks to owning this zune.
the main problem i found is the complete lack of after market support for the zune. there are no cases, cables, speakers to be found anywhere. the only place i found anything was on Ebay and it was cheap Chinese no name stuff. companies don't make much for the zune because its only 1% of the mp3 player market.
another big disappointment was the lack of an EQ feature. the first zune had one (the "rock, pop, rap, classical" level choice). music sounds crisp and clear, but without the EQ, a lot of songs with bass fall flat. even with my best studio monitor headphones the bass was lackingl. some isolating ear buds helped but the EQ feature is needed, in my opinion, to allow peoples different taste in music to sound its best.
the last thing that is a point off of this player is the fact that it is discontinued. Microsoft is no longer making these, although they said they will still support it. this could be good, though, if you can find it for a good price.

in conclusion, i would recommend this zune to people if they needed an fm radio or a biggish screen, or if they are music crazy like me, because of the zune pass for unlimited music. if these things don't seem important, id say stick to the iPod. they dominate the market for a reason, and the support from other companies is massive. i will not go back to iPod, but i am not most people. it all depends on where your priorities lye.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

I bought the Zune 120 in January of 2009 and it's worked great until now, October 2009.

I think the problem is with the software on the device. I won't go into specifics but basically the Zune jams at times and you must hard boot to get control back. This is annoying.

There are a few good forums out there for Zune users but most posts are just people having the same problems complaining about how Microsoft isn't fixing their problem.

The Zune software is easy to use but if I were going to do it again I would buy the IPOD instead just to make it easy. It is probably worth the extra money just for the support.

Can't recommend this to anyone.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

I was trying to decide between the 120 zune and iPod, the radio tipped me over even though iPod brought back the 160 the week I ordered. I use it on my motorcycle (one of the reasons I wanted a radio), my car and at work. I have yet to have any problems. I have dropped it at least three times in the last month, and it has been vibrated pretty hard on the bike for at least 1000 miles in that time and it has not had any problem with durability (some reviews implied that it was very sensitive). I can't say it is better than an iPod, because I have not really used one, but I would buy my zune again without a second thought. I've never owned an Ipod so I can't compare it to that. However I have owned 3 Creative MP3 players (Creative Xtra 40 and 60 gb and Zen Vision), and I have to say by far the Zune has got them beat. First I have to say I've had the 120gb Zune for 6 months now, and I haven't any problems. No software reloads like I constantly had with the Creative Vision M and easy smooth transition of CDs to the Zune. The plus is the Zune pass, for $14.99 a month and you get to download as many songs as you like and keep 10 songs permantently, even if you don't keep the Zune pass. The overall ease of the controls make it very simple and user friendly for anyone to use, so you don't have to been a rocket scientist to operate the Zune. Although a user manual is not included, going to the website gives you all the information that you will need to operate it. For me the Creative products that I have owned were very time consuming in trying to figure out how to operate them. And the constant loading and reformatting gave me a headache. Trust me whether you get a 4gb or a Zune 120gb, you can't go wrong. Microsoft really out did themselves with this MP3.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

Worse battery life ever. I don't know how this got such great reviews with a 5 hour battery life. I have wifi turned off, I have all the settings as low as they will go and I still only get 5 hours of audio play. I thought maybe I didn't charge it long enough so I let it charge while I slept and after 6 hours of charging it was still the same 5 hours of power.

I didn't buy this from Amazon but it will be going back to the store I did buy it from.

Some other problems I had with it.

1. Everything should have the resume option, not just podcasts and videos.

2. Very picky about what files it will except, especially video files.

I could have lived with that stuff but 5 hours of power? I'm out longer than 5 hours every day and I don't want to carry around a bunch of chords and power it up mid day.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

Jeez, times have changed! Years ago, I would hunt with a cassette player (later a CD player) and would have just a few songs to listen to. Now I carry 7900+ songs and a couple of hundred podcasts in a package that is smaller than either of those old clunky rigs. What I really like is the songlist feature. I can stack hours of music and have a great hunt. The battery lasts all day.

Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black) Right now

When I bought my Zune I immediatley loaded about 1400 songs and 1500 photos. I found the software very frustrating and hard to use. It scambled many of my music albums and dumping their contents into an "unknown album". After about 2 days use, the unit started giving errors when I started it up. I usually had to boot up a couple times before it would start up properly. At one point it would not start and announced that I must reload the firmware, which also resulted in the loss of all my music and photo inputs. I reloaded my music but shortly after that it announced to me that it was removing all contents on a start up attempt. I reloaded the music once again but it again a day later removed all contents after using it a couple times. I reloaded the music again and again it removed the contents on a start up. After a maddening week of this behavior, I bundled up the unit, returned it to the store, and exchanged it for an IPod Classic 7. I gave the unit 2 stars because its graphics and large screen is very good. The ergonomics is superior to the Ipod. I liked the FM radio feature. I think the Zune touch pad is easier to use than the IPod wheel which is awkward to me. It's just too bad the Zune unit was so buggy.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

Okay, lemme get this right out there now: I *DESPISE* iPods. I never liked their silly shiny white cases and their silly little wheels (and, until recently, their silly little DRM), vastly preferring Creative Labs' line of Zen/Jukebox/Extra/etc. players with actual buttons and a rocker switch that didn't require swirling your finger like a doofus for a full minute to get to the middle of the alphabet without overshooting. Never mind my Creative's relative durability vs. many of my friends' iPods that didn't get through their first year. Oh, and the 40 GB Creative was $100 cheaper than the 30 GB iPod at the time.

But progress is progress, and my music collection finally outgrew its 40 GB allocation about 4 years later. Imagine my disappointment to learn that Creative no longer built players larger than 32 GB; even with the optional 16 GB SD card in the expansion slot, it would really only be a stopgap measure while I shopped for an even larger player to last me in the long term. I was crushed that the only manufacturers of portable media players with more than 32 GB of storage capacity were Apple (120 GB iPod Classic), Microsoft (80 and 120 GB Zune), and Archos (32-500 GB, in 2 screen sizes), a relatively unknown French company that boasted more than its share of service- and reliability-related horror stories. Since the iPod Classic was out of the question for me, that left Microsoft's Zune and the Archos "Internet Media Tablet."

After months of agonizing consideration, I finally settled on the Zune over the Archos for several reasons. First and foremost, none of the North American retail outlets that Archos claimed sold Archos devices at the time were anywhere near me, so I would've had to order it from Amazon (Best Buy has since started stocking the 16 GB version, but this obviously would have been much too small for me). While this obviously isn't a problem in-and-of-itself, I was not comfortable buying a device with such a terrible service reputation as the Archos from a seller I could not return it to in-person. I know Amazon's return policies are good, but I wasn't taking any chances with a $300 piece of electronics. Second, while the credible technical reviews I read of the Zune were almost overwhelmingly positive, those for the Archos devices were largely mixed. Most said the internet was painfully slow, the audio quality was simply "acceptable," battery life was abysmal, the touch-screen interface was (quite literally) hit-and-miss, the OS was bug-ridden and only metastable, build quality wasn't up to industry standards, etc. Plus, the company "nickel-and-dimes" users to death by selling video codecs, accessories, etc. that really should have been included in its $300 purchase price (like a wall-charger).

I bought my Zune at Best Buy almost exactly 2 months ago today, and I'm extremely happy with it. While it's true that the Zune doesn't come with a wall-charger either, the Microsoft-branded ones for sale at Best Buy are about half the price of Archos'. The player itself is also substantially cheaper than the 120 GB Archos: it was selling for about $250 at Best Buy when I got it, but I had a store coupon for 12% off, so I only actually paid about $220 (putting it to within $5 of Target's even lower price). The "squircle" control, which functions very much like a laptop touchpad, is much easier to use than that blasted iPod wheel. It will scroll directly proportionally to the force of your stroke, and exhibits inertia so you don't have to keep stroking/swirling. I'm also much more comfortable with dedicated "back" and "play/pause" buttons separate from the rest of the controls. The OS/user interface blends graphical flair more typically associated with iPods with the ease-of-use I was accustomed to after 5 years with my Creative. One particularly noteworthy example is the easy ability to queue music in an impermanent "Now Playing" playlist. Several of my friends have tried to claim that their iPods have such capability, citing the "on-the-go" playlist feature, but these people are obviously mistaking the act of creating a playlist with simply queuing something up. iTunes also lacks this feature, which is the main reason I don't use it.

I have yet to deeply probe the limits of battery life, as I'm one of those people who is in the habit of keeping all of his electronic devices charged whenever they're not in use. I realize this isn't strictly the best thing for battery longevity, but realistically, we're also talking about a device with a product cycle of 4-5 years anyway. I have no reason to believe battery life to be much under the claimed 30 hours of audio playback. Audio quality itself is perfectly fine to my relatively undiscerning ears, but is obviously dependent more upon the quality of the source media. I also haven't spent any time poking around the Zune Store. If you're anything like me, and still get 95% of their music on actual plastic discs or from Amazon's awesomely user-friendly mp3 store, you likely won't either. One caveat about this point, however, is that Microsoft only allows Zune devices to sync with the proprietary Zune desktop software. Some people love it, but I'm not one of them; I use Windows Media Player as my primary music software, and really wish they'd add Zune support for it since they're obviously both MS products. Having said this, however, the sync feature of the Zune desktop software is superb, fast, and virtually seamless.

Don't listen to the people complaining about how it's "not an iPod." Of course it's not. And I don't wish to rail against the idiocy of this sentiment, but it does the person expressing it a disservice by betraying said idiocy. If you're one of those people who reeeeeeaaaaally *has* to have an iPod, you probably shouldn't even be reading this. For people like that, iPods are more a fashion statement and a means of belonging than a functional piece of equipment, so nothing I can say about the virtues of this product could persuade them to consider something else. What it boils down to is this: if you don't like iPods but want a player larger than 32 GB, this (or the 80 GB version) is the ONLY player for you. Until they've vastly improved the firmware and durability, built a bit more market share, and set up more corporate infrastructure here in North America, don't waste your time looking at Archos devices unless you want to run the risk of blowing $300+ on a brick you may or may not ever get fixed. Even if you don't hate iPods, I strongly urge you to seriously consider the Zune. It is very much a competent and credible competitor to the iPod. I, for one, am extremely satisfied with mine despite being prepared not to be so thoroughly thrilled.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

I love the Zune. I'm not some anti-Apple person, but I do feel they are overrated. As an owner of a Zune 120 and an iPod Touch, I love my Zune loads better. Why? For one thing, the Zune software you use to manage your music is more attractive and much easier to use than iTunes. I cannot express how much I hate iTunes. Just getting songs from your computer library into the iTunes library is such a pain in the ass. It has such an awkward way of doing things. The Zune software is easy: you have your collection, which constitutes all the music on your computer, then you have your device, which shows everything actually on your Zune. To get music onto the Zune, you just find it in your collection, right click, and select sync. That's it. The organization of the files is also easier to view and manage, and the aesthetics of the colors and design blow iTunes away. It is a very sophisticated, attractive-looking software that makes iTunes look complicated and ugly.

But what I love most about my Zune is that the music quality is better than the iPod. After listening to the same songs on my iPod and my Zune, I can say the Zune has much better sound quality. My iPod did seem to be able to get louder than the Zune as far as volume, but songs on the Zune sound better overall so the small difference in volume doesn't phase me much. The Zune doesn't have an equalizer, but every song I've listened to on it sounds perfect as is anyway. I can definitely tell the difference between this and the iPod.

The user interface on the device itself is also nice to look at, simply yet attractive, and again, easier to use than iPods. You simply have your music, video, pictures, radio, settings, etc. all listed one under the other. You can also change your Zune's background image to whatever image you like. I synced a ton of nice photos to my Zune, and I can go in and set any one of them to be my background image, so it's fun to mess around with and see what looks cool on it.

The screen also has vibrant, bold colors that really stand out. Album art and pictures are fantastic to look at. It may be my imagination, but I can swear the album art and pictures on my iPod don't have the same resolution and colors as they do on my Zune. The screen is so vibrant and bright, it really looks awesome.

It also has an FM Radio and the ability to transfer songs from one Zune to another, however I don't ever use these features.

One thing the iPod has that the Zune lacks is apps, however, I found most of the apps for the iPod to be gimmicky, flashy crap anyway. Only about half of them were good for anything, the rest were just time wasters like bubble wrap and Zippo lighters. I don't need any of that junk on my music player. I'm not 12.

One GREAT thing about the Zune, however, is it's construction. These things are hard to scratch up. They are made of metal, and the backside is a tough, hard plastic. The iPods scratch SOOOOO easily, I HATED that about them. Their shiny, glossy surface was so susceptible to scratches and other wear and tear, that it was impossible to keep it looking new without having a protective casing on it. My Zune has been dropped a few times and carried around with me everywhere with no protective casing, and it still looks as new as the day I bought it.

Basically, I love the Zune way better than my iPod Touch...the ease of use and the overall better quality do it for me.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

Save yourself a headache and don't buy from Microsoft whenever there is an alternative. Google "Zune Problems" for a sample of the issues. Here are just a few of the problems I've had with the Zune 120: 1) Impossible to get more than one video onto the device. Some users report they are able to sync videos, but it can take hours (!) for even a short clip. In my case, the progress icon gets stuck at 50%, 90%, etc but can never finish. Many others report the same bug. How can Microsoft sell a product like this? 2) They offer 14 free days of membership to the Zune music marketplace website - don't take it! Just buy from Amazon or some other reputable site. Microsoft automatically renews the membership with the credit card you provide, unless you explicitly opt out. Fine, a lot of companies do this, but in the case of Microsoft, it is probably easier to quit the Mafia than to quit their music website. I spent well over an hour trying to terminate the membership, but could not get it taken care of (I have a PhD in physics from Caltech, by the way). The Internet consensus, from what I've read, is that Microsoft does this intentionally to enhance revenue: 3) After purchasing a couple dozen songs from Zune, the site stopped accepting my credit card ("invalid card"). There was nothing wrong with the card, but I changed to another credit card anyway - same problem. After wasting 90 minutes, I decided to just purchase the rest of my songs from Amazon (Same credit card and, now, no problem). Why bother dealing with Microsoft Zune music center at all? 4) The "customer support" is non-existent. Try finding a valid email address for questions! I finally found a "customer support" phone number. After a 40 minute wait, the line went dead. If you are still considering a Zune, Google "Zune Problems" or similar KW. Also, try finding a customer support phone number and call - see how that goes for you BEFORE you purchase their product.

When deciding on which mp3 player to buy, I did a lot of homework on the Zune and truly thought I was making a good choice. All of its features are considered to be totally comparable the the iPod classic, and some are even better-screen size and weight for instance. Unfortunately, when I began setting the Zune up and syncing it to my computer, my computer did not recognize the device--even though the Zune was plugged into the USB port and receiving a charge. I tried everything that was recommended from Zune's online support, but still nothing. I called Zune and they tried 2 or 3 steps to eliminate the error, but that didn't work either. They told me to send it in for repair, which would take at least 3 weeks. A month later, I received a refurbished Zune and started the set up process all over again...and the same thing happened! I called them right away and this time spent almost an hour with a representative who tried to troubleshoot the issue, but nothing worked. When they told me I'd have to send the replacement Zune in for repair, I decided I'd had enough of Zune and contacted Amazon for a refund, which they graciously granted. The next day I bought an iPod, which is what I should've done in the first place! Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

Buy Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black)

I've had this for a month now. I really like it. The video quality is great (when you convert videos to use the H264 codec) and mp3 sound quality is great. The Zune software is ok at best.

Some things I should mention is only the Zune software works with managing the Zune. You can't use Windows or Winamp or iTunes. Also when I bought this off Amazon I paid $220 for it. The date of this review, I see that the price is at $339.99. Either these things are really in demand, or Microsoft/Amazon is purposely trying to get you to buy the Zune HD models.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

The problems with the Zune far outweigh the pleasures of owning this product. Software issues are terrible. Syncing sucks and the linking to Windows Media Player creates hell on earth for those who just want to put music on the unit and go away to listen in peace.

1) Ease of use - It is constantly losing sync with items on the unit. One year of owning these units has lost me countless hours loading and reloading files. The Playlist feature is a nightmare considering that I created playlists in Windows Media Player and then saved them as Zune playlists. This is a total nightmare since Zune duplicates files, renames them (Playlist-Name of file or adds a (2) then a (3) and so on...), then duplicates those if there are changes I as yet have been able to fathom. I started with 40,000 songs and 100 playlists.
I now have over 800 playlists that have been created by Zune and not by me. Deleting them was another nightmare. Zune loses sync when you delete original files or files duplicated by Zune. Leaving you to delete all content and playlists and starting over loading tunes again.

2) User Friendly - What is an attempt by Zune to integrate Zune playlists, which are clumsy and difficult to put together, leaves you with a situation that is unworkable for those who have large collections of music and just want to Zune as an MP3/WMA player.

I can't comment on the other features since I bought this to play my cd's that I ripped to my computer and transferred to the Zune to listen.

In conclusion if you buy this to use as a music player, think again... unless you like to spend 5-7 hours to repair whatever the Zune decides to do to your music library (which is averaging about once a week). Too bad cause it sounds good with headphones purchased as an upgrade from the ones they give you on purchase.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

This is my second 120G zune. I had to send my old one in for repair because the screen had factory defects in it. Microsoft replaced the unit with a refurbished one in 5 weeks, a little too long if you ask me.

The sound quality is not as good as the 30g zune. Lots of BASS is missing. I am an audiophile so these minor changes would not bother most people, but I noticed a big difference in sound quality. Kind of dissaponined. I have done a side by side comparision of the two devices with the same music loaded on each, the 30g always sounds better and louder.

I cant complain too much. 120 gigs is a lot of space in such a compct design.

Bottom Line: This is a great player with a great screen but do not expect the best sound quality.
