I give the Zune one star because I have been through 4 defective units. I would give it a perfect 5 stars based on all other measures.

Over the course of 6 months, I have owned three 8GB and one 120GB Zunes. Each one lasted about 2 months (though one lasted only a week), then refused to power up and/or reset. I took good care of each and didn't drop or otherwise bang up any of them. I used the Zune wall charger to recharge them. I scoured the web to find solutions for the problem, and found many users who had the same problem - though the usual solution of performing a reset did not work for me. Luckily, the store that I bought them from would allow me to exchange the units when they went unresponsive.

Prior to my Zune experience, I owned several Creative Labs MP3 players, all of which lasted for years. I regrettably traded in my final defective Zune for an iPod 120GB, which I have been using for a month now. Of ALL of the players that I have used (including my new iPod), I like the Zune the best. The display is the largest and clearest, the menu system is the most useful, and the controls (except the center "select" button, which can be hard to hit squarely) are the easiest to use and most logical. I find the use of the iPod scroll wheel, menus, and display to be annoying. The Zune was a pleasure to use, when it worked, but it just kept bricking on me. I want to start this off by saying all the positive things these people are saying about the Zune are true. This 120 Zune looks amazing. The screen is crisp and pleasing to the eye. The sound quality is very good, theres a couple of cute games on there if you like poker or puzzle games.
I have the Zune pass so i download unlimited music every month for 15 bucks. (with the exception of a couple of bands who make you pay, I am looking at YOU Red Hot Chili Peppers)
You might be asking yourself "This does NOT sound like a 3 star review so far...."
And you know what, if music was all i wanted this Zune for it WOULD be a 5 star review.
What drops this down to 3 is the fact that the MICROSOFT ZUNE does not support WMV files.

The only video i've been able to watch so far have been the one free episode of "Parks and Recreation" they give you at the Zune store.
My digital movies all come from Amazon Digital and from Digital copies of DvDs i buy. All very legal, all very much mine to put on my Zune.
Then i use windows to save them to my hard drive as WMV files.
I thought maybe i was dumb and didn't understand the workings of the Zune, that probably in a couple days i'd stumble upon a way that the Zune softwear would convert my files to be Zune friendly. Instead i googled "Why won't my Zune play my WMV files" and found this to be a common frustration with Zune owners. That microsoft is "First and foremost a music player..." (quoted from Microsoft VP J. Allard when asked about why Zune doesn't support WMV files)
Well, if you, like me are shelling out 230-330 bucks (depending on the add ons a protective case and what not) then i'm guessing your going to want your video files to play on it as well.

I bought my Zune 120 a few months ago in December, but I didn't want to write a review until I had used it a lot and gotten used to its interface. I've used my Zune quite a bit these past four months. I can say that this MP3 player is really great.

A lot of people complain about the lack of an EQ on the MP3 player and the software, but the quality is great so I honestly don't care; other people might.

It's pretty tough. I've dropped it pretty hard several times (on the sidewalk, kitchen tile, bathroom (I prefer to listen to music while I do my business)), and apart from some microscopic chips of paint on the backside there are no dents or even noticeable scratches. However, it does get a lot of fingerprints and becomes slightly greasy from the oil on your hands after a while, but it isn't anything a cloth for cleaning glasses can't fix.

The interface is very intuitive. After about an hour, I had learned its every function. It's pretty easy.

A minor complain I have with the Zune 120 is the battery life. It doesn't come close to the 30 hours of battery life that Microsoft advertises, or however long they say it lasts. But I mean, seriously, who listens to music for 30 straight hours? So, it's not even that big of a deal for me.

The biggest complain I have with the Zune 120 isn't even with the MP3 player. It's the syncing software. It is insufferable at times. Between struggling to properly tag songs for the Zune Social, improperly displaying graphics, and lacking a simple eject button (you have to eject the Zune from the Start Taskbar or close the program), I've had my share of frustrating moments with the software. The fact that the MP3 player can only be used with the Zune software doesn't help. I hope Microsoft comes out with a better version of the software soon.

But apart from the sub-par software and the mediocre battery life, the Zune 120 is definitely worth buying. I had 3 iPods before I bought my Zune, and they gave me way more problems than the Zune, although I must admit the excellent iTunes surely made up for the iPod's deficiencies. The Zune itself is great (the battery dosen't last as long as they say, but it's not that big of a deal). It's simple, well built, and farily easy to use. On the other hand the software is total garbage. It displays albume incorrctly for about 20% of my MP3s. Simply put, I love this thing. Huge storage space, easy to sync program. Readable screen. I really like my Zune, the red looks really good. I purchased a Zune 30 a couple of years ago, and really liked it, but I like this one even better. After painstakingly re-downloading all my 100+ cds, pictures, music video for the second time, I know I have to return the refurbished one back. I tried but cannot settle for this inferior one. After more than an hour of pleading with the customer representative(with an Indian accent). Half the time, I had to ask him to repeat what he said, I couldn't make out anything he said. I've had my Zune 120 for over a month now, and I have to say I'm quite pleased. I really like the touchpad interface - much more than the IPod click-wheel. Also, the touchpad works as a regular push-button interface, so I can just hold the bottom part of the pad to go down the list of songs, and click the center to select.

I'm not super in love with the playlist interface - I haven't found how to remove a single song from the playlist, or to just add a single song. If I add one song, it goes on to play the rest of the album, or the next song alphabetically, or the next song by the artist, depending on how I navigated to the song in the first place. It's not been too much of a bother, and I would be surprised if it's anything other than my own ignorance to blame...

but on that subject, Zune doesn't offer a whole lot in the way of introducing you to how to use it. It's pretty much "here's where the buttons are, here's how to sync, figure the rest out." The internet helps, but I would have appreciated more straight-up introduction to the interface. It was a while before I realized you could hold the center button to open up addition options (playlist, favorite, etc).

I've been pretty negative in this review so far, but I don't want to create the wrong impression: I really like my Zune. I carry it all over. The sound quality is great, and the video quality surprised me how great it was. I've watched entire movies on it. Recharging times are as quick as they say they are - I've only had to intentionally charge it once (after several hours of video). 20-30 minutes a day charging in the car while I drive makes up for all my other use, which sometimes includes playing it all night while I sleep.

For me, also, the wireless syncing is a huge benefit. To be able to sync up the new album I just downloaded without bothering with sync cables... it's nice. Lastly, Zune also comes with an FM receiver, so I can get radio, too. It's nice to have the option.

I'm generally happy with the Zune, but a small quality problem led to a "cross your fingers and wish for the best" warranty experience. Customer service was impersonal and their warranty policy is weak.

My hold/lock switch broke after a few months. This was outside the return window through Amazon, so I had to service it through warranty. The warranty policy is that you return the unit to Microsoft and they send a refurbished unit as a replacement. They will not guarantee the same color and style, only the same model. I got the same color in return, but the policy made me think I should have bought the Apple ipod. I was nervous about what the refurbished replacement would be like. I told an ipod user friend about the experience and he said Apple service would have been much better.

I love the Zune in almost every way. It's easy to use, good sound quality and well made. I could do without the Zune software, it takes forever to load and has more bells and whistles than I need. For a music lover, I came to the mp3 world relatively late. Probably one reason for this is that my only experience with mp3 players was with my wife's Ipod. That device has always seemed counter-intuitive and awkward to me. After dealing with that device for a few years I started looking for a simple player, something akin to a flash drive with speakers, that I could connect to my computer and drag some music files onto and go. Before I ever got around to buying something that simple, my wife bought me this Zune 120 for Christmas and I've never looked back.

First I'll list the good stuff:

- All of the instructions were clear right out of the box.

- The Zune software/computer interface is also pretty intuitive. I learned to use it quickly and can see the benefit of having that proprietary software in place to provide a structure to the contents and files I have placed on my Zune device. Its WAY better and easier to use than the Ipod/I-tunes software.

- This thing has a HUGE amount of memory. My Zune is barely 1/3 full and I now have every scrap of music I own (2,500 songs) and a ton of video (including 50 episodes of the Three Stooges) stored on this device!

- The battery life is very good, especially if all you want to do is listen to music. It also charges quickly, both in the dock and when connected to a USB port on my computer.

- The sound quality is excellent, the volume goes plenty high enough, and the screen is large and crystal clear. I don't mind watching video on this screen at all.

- Probably my favorite thing about the Zune though is the ease of navigation. It took me about 5 minutes to get the hang of moving between the menus. It is also super easy to use the "Squircle" pad, and the swipe touch sensitivity is incredible. It sure makes super fast scrolling down a list of songs a breeze.

The only "downsides" I have encountered with my Zune are:

- The screen is a fingerprint magnet, and seems like it could scratch easily (I have been careful/lucky and so far my screen is still in great shape).

- Connecting the Zune device to a TV is not terribly intuitive and I have yet to find a good set of instructions on how to accomplish this.

Overall, this device has taken me from someone who never liked MP3 players to someone who now couldn't live without it. It is a very high quality player with great performance features and an intuitive, easy to use feel. Highly recommended!

Sound: very clear and natural using my Sony MDR-V900HD's at home, and Sennheiser PX-200's on the go. Indistinguishable from the great sounding Creative Zen (set flat), to my ears. The Zune has no EQ, which was initially a negative for me, but after a week of listening I don't miss it. I tried my Zen again (which I had set to +12dB on 80Hz) and with the EQ on it sounded muddy compared to the Zune. It also does gapless albums, which Creative has never heard of apparently.

Browsing: the interface is great. It's intuitive, quick, and attractive. The buttons and the touch pad all work well. It responds very well to how fast you swipe across it. It's possible to skip through your albums very fast with a few up or down swipes. The only tricky thing is the center select on the touch pad - sometimes it's tough to hit it just right.

Screen: videos and album art look exceptionally nice on the 120GB. I don't know if it's just the bigger screen size, or processor, or refresh rate, but video looks much better than it does on the Zen (which brags about its 16.7M colors). Obviously the number of colors can be a misleading spec to go by. No problems playing DVD's converted to 30fps, 1.5Mbps wmv's.

There are very few songs/albums I've looked for and not found, the sound quality is the same as amazon (192kbps wma vs 256kbps mp3), and now I get to keep 10 songs (in mp3 format) per month, forever. Also the podcast selection is enormous, and there are a lot of tv shows, although they are $2 each.

The Zune 120GB is also now the sole music source in my home system. I bought the home AV pack (v2) and I run the dock's line out through the stereo. Sounds great, and the remote works well. (all the cables that come with the zune and its accessories are very nice, pro quality)

But what's the point of all this content if you can't take it with you? The Zune device is the perfect companion for you. The device has a squircle touch-sensitive pad that allows easy navigation between your menus. Each menu is arranged vertically and the submenus of each menu are arranged horizontally. This is a very simple and direct method of searching for content and each option is displayed in big letters for easy reading. The one downside is that it might take a few button presses to get where you want, but it isn't a cumbersome method as the menus are quick and responsive to your presses and gestures onto the squircle button. On a slower player this could kill the enjoyment of navigating the slick menu, but the Zune really handles navigation well.

The screen is a big factor, too. Compared to the iPod classic, Zune's screen is much bigger and thus you won't strain your eyes to watch videos. The sound on the player is top notch and all the nuances of any kind of music come through well on the included headphones, but if you want the best quality, I'd recommend an upgrade on those phones. The included ones aren't bad and they sure beat the iPod's headphones, but overall there is always something better to hear your music through.

I could go on and on about other features of this player, but the real sell for this (and I REALLY recommend you purchase this) is a Zune Pass. Yes, the Zune Pass is by far the BEST feature for this player. By purchasing a Zune Pass you can download and play almost any song you want from the entire library carried by the Marketplace. On top of that you get to keep 10 songs for free. In essence you are given 10 credits for songs at the beginning of your one month Zune Pass subscription. If you want a song, you "buy" it with your free credit and you get to keep it. This is a great way to experience new music and expand your collection and your tastes. Anything you don't like you just delete it without any buyer's remorse.

Truly, this combination of services, software and device greatly warrant the purchase of the Zune. I've had nothing but great things to say about the Zune and even though this isn't the market leader in the industry, it makes the market leader seem clueless as to how to properly create a great service for customers.

I love my Zune. It's great. But it's not without flaws.

(1) The software was not compatible with Vista business. I tried to install and got an error message that installation failed. To get around this, I had to turn off the firewall during installation. Why is Microsoft Zune software not compatible with Microsoft Windows?!

(2) After installation and I connected the Zune, the Zune refused to turn on and begin charging. I had to restart the computer with the Zune still connected for it to begin charging. Works fine now. Just another mystery of Microsoft I guess.

I have been on the marketplace for a new player for a while, and had settled on the zune after buying - and returning - an ipod. With the ipod, I couldn't stand how it made you do everything through itunes, and you had so little leeway for making changes, sync options, etc. I was on the phone with the tech support people asking them if I could do what I wanted (keep podcast episodes on my ipod but not on my hard drive so it didn't take up space on my work computer) and they said "no" and didn't charge me for the call.

So now I get the zune, and I'm all happy, until I realize I'm in the same dilemma, AND I hate the zune software, which is clunky, and basically unusable on xp until you get the updated version. There are apparently hacks letting you use it as a hard drive, but it involves working around in registries, and that scares me, so I grin and bear it. The one thing I will say, though, is that it does give you far more options of where to save things like podcasts (external hard drives, for example) and where to get your music from, than the ipod did, so it has that going for it.

I'll keep it because I like the red color, and the look of it more than the ipod classic. Plus the ipod classic doesn't have wifi yet (at least the one I got didn't) and this does. And I like the big screen.

Also, I have rhapsody and an emusic subscription, so the zune pass doesn't do much for me.

When I park my car in my garage, my zune automatically syncs with my media center pc and downloads the TV shows I recorded, new music and pod-casts. I do nothing; all my new media is ready for me the next time I drive.

I have a car with a rear seat built-in DVD player with video input jacks. So anytime we go anywhere, the kids have all the new episodes of their shows.

The zune has wireless sync. If the zune is plugged into an external power source and sits idle for a minute it tries to wirelessly sync. Under battery power you have to initiate the wireless sync.

It's great. I do have an idea for improvement:
-a car docking station that supports video. The zune car pack is great for audio with it's built in FM transmitter. My set up right now is the zune lays on the backseat with the A/v cables coming out of top of the zune and the power cable coming out the bottom. it works, but could look better. Microsoft & 3rd party equipment manufacturers: I'd like car docking station that has the functionality of the home docking station (charging, rca a/v outputs & IR remote. I'd like the zune to be cleanly & securely mounted up front with me and let the kids in the backseat use the remote to watch their videos.

It is with some disappointment that I recommend that you not purchase this product. I was very happy with the device and the features, and I liked the interface of the desktop software. But I found that when I was inputting music and other album information the software crashed about every 10-20 minutes, often losing the data I had been inputting and frequently requiring me to reboot my computer. So what had taken me about 5 - 10 hours with iTunes took several times that with Zune. But then things got much worse. When it was about 7 weeks old, the device broke (the backward and forward and up and down buttons stopped working) and so after spending a great deal of time on the phone with Microsoft's technical help people they told me to send it back and they'd replace it. The nightmare began. They told me I'd have it back in 6 - 10 business days, and it took SEVEN WEEKS. The trouble doesn't stop there. After I spent a couple of hours on the phone with them and reinstalled both the device software and the desktop software, it still wouldn't work - so they told me to send it in again and they would send me another new one, again in 6-10 business days. When that time had elapsed (with no Zune in my mailbox) and I called them, they told me that it would be more like 15-20 business days and, by the way, they wouldn't send me a new one, they'd send me a refurbished one that was "comparable" to what I had originally purchased. So when I finally receive that one it will have been well over five months since I originally purchased it (of which I will only have been in possession of it for about 7 weeks), and I will have a refurbished one when I bought a new one. All of the ten or so different customer service people I have spoken to have told me they "understand my frustration" and offer "sincere apologies", but that there was nothing else they could do. As a former owner of the Apple iPod classic 80 GB Black (6th Generation) , I have to say that Apple had me trapped. I hardly ever used the iTunes store because of the DRM restrictions (I usually ended up buying the CDs anyway). The iPod itself caused a few problems in itself (the unstable headphone jack killed at least 3 pairs of headphones and completely gave out within 6 months). I loved using Rhapsody to discover new music, but there weren't any similar subscription services that were compatible with iPod.
That's why i switched to the Zune. I found it to be a good switch, and a better fit for my listening habits. I love looking for new artists, and i found that the Zune marketplace was a good place to do so. I liked the idea of paying a flat rate per month to download whatever music i want. And 9 times out of 10, I find an artist on the iTunes store and it shows up on the zune marketplace, too. Most of the time, the zune pass allows you to download it via the zune pass, but every once in a while an artist decides to be selfish and make you pay for each song even with the zune pass. The best part is, instead of just playing them on the computer like Rhapsody does, I can take them all with me wherever i go!
The device itself is easy to use, durable, and includes plenty of features I use, and only a few I don't. My biggest problem is that the zune device has no equalizer. Not a big deal. I can't use it as a hard drive either, but the iPod wasnt really much good for hard drive anyway. The screen is basically the size of an iPod screen stacked on top of another iPod screen. Much easier on the eyes for watching videos.

I was a bit anxious when I bought this Zune 120. I'd never owned a full mp3 player of any kind before, and while I'd done my homework, the thing that scared me the most about what I'd read was experts said the Zune software was not "intuitive." I'm not very tech savvy, though I do use tech at work and some minor tech (digital camera & its software; cell phone with camera, video and tiny mp3 player) at home.

Well, this Zune is tremendous! I've been having fun from the moment I took it out of the box. I've downloaded singles (something I swore I wouldn't do because I was sure it'd be too complex) and filed them in my own "singles" folder. I've learned, without recourse to "FAQS," how to make playlists and to have one album after the other play on loop. SO COOL! My students (I teach college) might not be awed that I'm using a Zune 120 (it's large), but the huge screen makes it possible for my middle-aged eyes to do amazing things with ease. If you're thinking of buying a Zune because you don't have an Apple computer and you keep your music organized in Windows Media Player, you probably think a Microsoft Zune is the way to go. After all, it's made by Microsoft, the Windows people.
Don't be fooled. Even though Media Player will recognize and sync your music to any number of other brands of MP3 players, if you have a Zune you have to use the extremely slow and feature-weak Zune software to interact with the device.

i purchased this zune for two reasons. one i hate itunes and second i am not to fond of the ipod scroll wheel. i now realise i should have bought an ipod.

THE BAD
three dsays after i purchased the zune i let it charge overnight in a cold room. the battery got hot and the room was cold so the glass cracked straight down the screen. it was just a perfect straight crack down the glass, no spidering so i figured i could live with it.

a few days later my zune battery died with half a charge left. i tried to turn it back on but it would just blink dead battery. this does not happen everytime but it will happen ocasionaly. i tried to get a replacment but because the glass was cracked the warrenty was no good. this is within the first week.

the crack from before has started to spread.

There are so many cheap accesories out there for the ipod. the zune has almost nothing in retail stores, to get anything you have to go to ebay and spend and arm and a leg.

All this would b acceptable accept for this last issue. as of now i can no longer sync (connect) my zune to the computer. i have been trying desprately for over a week now doing everything i can to connect but i have not had any luck. it simply charges my zune when i try. compleately out of no where it decides not to connect, it was working fine a week ago. this means the music i have on there is there forever and i cant put any new music on it. i still have 100gb left and my zune is a little less than 6 months old.

THE GOOD

The zune software is FAR superior to the ipods (itunes). if you can get it to work. it is much simpiler and way more fun to use.

The back of the zune wont scrach like crazy likes the shinny ipod will. it stays looking newer longer, as long as the very thin glass covering the screen does not crack.

The screen is larger and better for not just movies but scroling through music and custom backgrounds.

It has a radio option but unless you live in a big city or within three miles of the radio tower you wont pick up anything.

wireless sync. i bet its cool but i could never get it to work.

the zune pad is much better than the ipod scroll wheel. you have the option to scroll or click and it is just easier to use.

IN CONCLUSION if my zune was more dependable and worked the way it was supose to work it would b a clear better choice than the ipod but sadly it is trash. garbage. im goiing to save for another year and buy an ipod. and i would sugest you do the same. the internet is full of people having the same problems as me.

I got the Zune 120 GB, sure is pretty. It took two hours to download the Zune into my computer. I miss being able to scroll through the music I want like I can on my Sansa`s. You must create playlists and if you desire to hear a certain song while away from home, too bad. Also, after purchasing a CD and want to print the CD sleeve, there is no way I could find to print it. I am taking it back to the store. Customer service or support is non existent. generally a good device, though I find the scroller a little obnoxious on this device, as there is no effective way to scroll through a lot of albums (where as other players have an option for scrolling through the alphabet as opposed to going through each album).

Also very annoying is that I can't find a way to make the titles of songs that are too long to fit unto the screen to scroll through the title, as you can with other players.

Lastly it is a little annoying that I cannot use windows media player to upload music unto the device, but rather have to use a special "Zune" program. It isn't a huge deal as it downloads all my music to the program anyways, but I've gotten used to using Windows Media player, and you would think the device being made by Microsoft and all you'd be able to us Windows Media Player.

This is a great item. I had the 30 GB version previously (it was stolen), and bought this one as a replacement. The touchpad is sensitive and can be annoying at times. After a while of use, it is easy to use, simple and works well. I prefer the Zune PC interface better than the iTunes. It is easy to use and allows great flexibility in settings and preferences.
Hopefully the Zune will allow browsing the internet in the future. Right now it only allows you to purchase music off its site.
There are no car adapters that allow DIRECT connection to the head unit in a car - this is especially annoying as you have to use the Zune itself to control the music. Most cars can have an iPod connector. Hopefully this will change very soon. My bluetooth transmitter works well with this Zune. I link it to my Oakley bluetooth glasses.
I really enjoy this item, but i may have to purchase an iPod for use in one of my cars, as it has an iPod connector.

I've had the Zune 120gb since February of this year. I was debating on this and the iPod Classic 120gb back and forth and finally came to the conclusion of the Zune 120gb because I wanted to try something new and the features on the Zune beat the iPod Classic...

Upon first opening the box you have the:
1. Zune 120gb device.
2. Earphones.
3. Sync/Charge USB Cable
4. 14 day free trial of Zune Pass.
5. Manual and other documents.

This is from memory since I lost the box, so If I left out anything I'm sorry...

The software disc is "NOT" included with the Zune this is the reason why the box is so small. You need to download the Zune software off of the internet on [...]. When the software is installing it'll ask you to plug in your Zune to update it and handle the rest. Just leave the computer alone and let it do it's thing. The software once fully loaded is very stylish and smooth. Sending media to the Zune is a breeze. It takes some time to get used to it but it's pretty simple.

Zune Pass is a service in which you par $15 a month for unlimited music downloads. You can listen to the music over and over until that month is over or unless you continue to renew the subscription until you stop renewing it. After every month you can keep 10 of the songs you downloaded. I personally don't use this service since I'm an audiophile and I buy the actual CD's and rip them into WMA Lossless format to be sent to my Zune 120gb. When you purchase a song from the marketplace they are 320kbps in bitrate quality. Songs acquired from the Zune Pass subscription service are in 192kbps. WMA Lossless songs usually average 800kbps bitrate quality so yea you are losing quality when downloading from the marketplace. But most people don't buy expensive earphones like me and use the bundled earphones that comes with the device so they won't notice the difference.

Navigation [ 5 out of 5 ]:
The touchpad squircle is a very nice addition to the newer Zune's. It gives you that touch screen feeling without the fingerprints all over your screen. Navigating through the menu on the Zune is very straight forward and easy. The Menu consists of:

Pictures
Social
Radio
Marketplace
Games
Podcasts
Settings

Clicking on Music brings you to your music collection in which you can search for songs by songs, artists, genres, albums and playlists. Clicking on Videos will bring you to your video collection in which you can't specifically search for your videos. The videos are just listed there. Clicking on Pictures will bring you to your picture collection in which you can search by folder or by date in which the pictures were uploaded to the device. You can save a picture as the background wallpaper in the menu by clicking the picture and while viewing the picture click the middle button on the directional pad and select "Set As Background". Clicking on Social will bring you to an area where you can search for nearby Zune users in your vicinity who has their wireless activated. You can also look at your friends list or check you inbox for incoming invites to share a song or picture. To take full advanatage of Social you need to enable the WiFi chip on your Zune by going into Settings. This reduces battery life so use only when needed! Clicking on Radio brings you to the radio tuner in which you can select different stations. Clicking on Marketplace brings you to the Marketplace to download more songs but you need the WiFi chip to be enabled along with a wireless router with open access in your vicinity. Clicking on Games brings up a list of games you have installed on the device in which you can either launch or delete. Clicking on podcasts brings up a list of podcasts you have on the device. You can switch between Video or Audio podcasts. Clicking of Settings brings up a list of options you can change to suit your needs better.

Sound Quality [ 4 out of 5 ]:
The sound is very clean and crisp. It sounds better than a iPod Classic. The sound coming from the Zune 120gb is also suprisingly nuetral with no noticeable emphasis in any part of the frequency spectrum. It's a nice balanced sound. The soundstage is very open and clear. The radio has a clean reception of sound with no extreme hissing or static. The Zune's amp hisses when you are using sensitive earphones. I personally use the Shure SE530's which cost about $300 on Amazon. Wonderful earphones. I even did a review on it go check it out when you're done reading this! What I mean by the hissing is when there is no music playing or quiet passages of the music are going by you will hear a faint ssssssssssss noise that sounds like a calming ocean sound. You won't hear hissing with the bundled earbuds because they are not sensitive. There is no type of sound enhancement or sound editing option the Zune 120gb. Those options eat up battery life and the Zune 120gb battery life isn't the best to begin with. The older Zune 30gb has simple EQ presets. The Zune 120gb as well as the Zune 80, 16, 8, and 4gb share the same DAC or digital to analog converter which was built from the ground up with Microsoft telling Wolfson what to add and what to leave out.

Screen Quality [ 4 out of 5 ]:
The screen is made out of glass so it is scratch proof since glass is pretty much harder than nearly everything in your house except if you own diamonds. The screen is a nice 3.2" screen which is .7" bigger than the iPod Classic's 2.5" screen. Also this Zune has a 18 bit 262,144 color screen at a screen resolution of 320x240 pixels. The iPod Classic has less colors per pixel but shares the same resolution so images will look sharper on the iPod's smaller screen but more washed out. When viewing videos on the Zune 120gb you will need to flip the device horizontally to watch it in landscape mode. The iPod Classic doesn't require this but I personally think it's a eye sore watching videos on a 2.5" screen. Since February I have yet to see a scratch on the screen of my Zune 120gb. They're scratches on the faceplate of the device though since that is made of plastic.

Aesthetics / Looks [ 5 out of 5 ]:
This is a very sleek and sexy device. This is a major improvement from the original Zune 30gb that was literally a brick with buttons and a screen. The Zune 120gb comes in a glossy shiny black or a glossy red if you order it from [...]. You can buy the zune originals and have custom artwork get engraved on the back of the Zune with any text message you would like. The buttons are placed very well on the device. The back button is on the left of the device. The squircle touchpad is in the middle of the device and it also is a 5 button direction pad. The play/pause button is on the right of the device. The hold switch is on the top left of the device. The headphone out is at the top right of the device and the USB input is at the bottom middle of the device.

Battery Life [ 3 out of 5 ]:
It's big improvement over the Zune 30gb. The battery for me lasts about 13 hours on audio alone. I personally use lossless files which eat the battery up much more quickly them lower quality audio files. If you are using regular audio files and don't fiddle with the device much when you're outside you should expect around a 18 hour batter life or more. The iPod Classic has a whopping 33 hour battery life but this is not the case in a real life scenario. You may just get about 24 hours or less out of the iPod Classic from a real life user with real life settings.

Compatibility / File Support [ 3 out of 5 ]:
The Zune 120gb cannot be used with no other software but the Zune software. So you cannot drag and drop files onto the device straight from "My Computer" or windows explorer. The USB connector on the device is proprietary so if you lose or damage the cable you will need to pay $20 to buy another cable since you can't use any USB cable you may have laying about in your house. With 120gb's of storage on the Zune it can't be used as a external hard drive to store documents or back ups. iPod Classic supports this feature. There is a way around this but I dont know too much about it, sorry.

i bought the zune 120 because my ipod video broke and i needed a new mp3 player. transitioning from itunes to the zune programs is a bit confusing. zune's program are not really user friendly. It took me a while before i figure out how to make a playlist and such. also if a mp3 file does not have albums/artist and you want to add it, you have to do it manually for each file vs where in itunes you can select all and insert the albums name.

Let me tell you something about this zune. I bought this to replace my 160 gig IPOD, and it it did the same thing CRASHED the other day on a two day trip, I bought it in Feb. are you searious???? Now I got to drive all the way home bored out of my freakin mind with no music and listenning to my wifes CRAP. Ill tell you what portable music is a MF. Ive had 2 IPODs and now Im going to get my second Zune, I bought all the accessarieds to it so, I mind as well stick with it. I bought it because it was the worlds greatest Microsoft, BOY WAS I WRONG! Its a good player BUT, the battery runs down quickly if you skip around. I want to get another type of mp3 player but, like I said I bought the accessaries and Im going to stick with it. My IPOD lasted longer than my Zune did. WTF Microsoft! my IPOD lasted a little over a year till the warranty ran out and I coulndt get another replacement and my zune lasted 6 months and now its DEAD. This is how mine went down. First IPOD came to me dead and not working at all. I got another one and it went dead on me a few months after that, and warranty ran out so I couldnt get another replacement. So, I though Zune is the way to go, so I bought one and now 6 months later its dead to and now I have to send it back and wait probably a month or so till I get it and in the mean time Ill be using my cheap Coby that works great and hasnt failed me yet. Someone needs to come out with a player that lasts. I know my cheap Coby is still running good. They should come out with a 80 or 120 gig player, they would have my business in a heart beat. I really really want to like this, as far as hardware goes, it's top notch. The unit itself is very clean and sleek looking, the screen is big and pretty, I love LOVE the touch pad, more so than the ipod's clickwheel, all in all the hardware experience exceeds my expectations. so far this review is 5 stars

the software on the other hand, oh man, you go ahead and download the 133mb file from their site that is supposed to be up to date, except when you go to install it installs another 100mb worth of updates. I don't see why I can't just install the stupid thing then update later if I feel like it. I live in an area where high speed internet isn't an option and I can't exactly move anywhere, so this is horrible, I have to bring my computer all the way into the city to get a friends house with highspeed just so I can use my mp3 player. Another thing is, the (Microsoft) Zune isn't compatible with a Microsoft windows system out of the box, you need to download the software first...what? that makes no sense, because, you see, the (Apple) ipod, the company Microsoft is trying to compete with (destroy), works fine and dandy out of the box without itunes, in fact, it works with pretty much any media program capable of syncing, you don't even need to download itunes if you don't want to. Did I forget that?--The Zune only only only works with the Zune Software period. there is a program called zAlternator that enables you to sync with winamp or whatever, but it first involves opening the zune software and closing it in task manager then starting winamp, every single time. It is also the only mp3 player I've ever owned that isn't capable of being used as a mass storage device, which can be hacked to work easily, unfortunately you can never write to it, so I can't bring it to a friends house and get some things, like pictures or what have you, and throw them up there, its almost as if Microsoft is deliberately trying to not be a contender in this mp3 race by sabotaging out the most basic of features.

Pros:
- Easy navigation
- Great capacity (120Gb)
- Amazing, big screen (Cowon's better, but it's a PVP)
- Zune Pass puts it over the top (more below).
- FM Radio...very handy at times
- Wi-Fi is fun gadget factor, until you pair w/ another Zune, then it's a huge feature. Swapping tunes is a hoot (3 plays max, must own the song to share) and is painless.
- Games are wonderful if you're stuck in a waiting room or between meetings.

Even w/ other players (except as noted)
- Sound quality is very good. The other players have equalizers, but w/ the same headphones, Zune is just as good. (Exception: nothing comes close to the amazing audio quality of the Cowon A2)
- No case, neither did iPod, Cowon's is awesome.
- Build quality same iPod vs Zune vs Cowon (smaller players flimsy)

Cons:
- Gotta be battery life, especially video. Getting half what is cited unless I put screen brightness way down.
- Not as many settings and options as iPod
- Song search feature in iPod is essential in a large hard drive MP3 player, Zune doesn't have this.
- Not a fan of iTunes, but it's still better than the Zune PC software. Yuck. Version 4.0 just came out, hope it's better.
- Not as many accessories as iPod...for example not a killer case (that I've found).

Zune Pass is what puts the Zune Player over the top. For $14.99 I'm able to download almost everything in the Zune Marketplace, stream it or load it to my player (120Gigs is a lot of music!). Then once a month I choose 10 to keep. Assuming 99 cents per song value, this means the effective use of the service (all the music I want to sample) is just $4.99. And, you can share it with 3 other computers/Zunes. My daughter and I share the same account at $14.99/mo (10 keepers a month between us). Think I'll get my son a Zune for Christmas!

My wife and I share different views on portable media devices. She loves her iPhone (admittedly I have iphone envy at times) and I love my Zune. For now, this works for both of us. But I'm of the Portable media crowd, so I don't really desire to have all my eggs in a single iPhone basket. The sound quality of my zune makes my wife weep when compared to her iphone, btw. :)

about the only thing I find missing on the Zune (including the HD which is in my shopping cart as I write this) is the lack of bluetooth. Love this player. It has everything you could want, it's easy to use, and you can put practically your whole computer on it. I purchased the 120 GB about 9 months ago, having upgraded from the 80 GB Zune that I owned prior. Let me start this review by saying that I really wanted to love this thing, but, the passage of time has proven otherwise. I'll try to make this short and sweet:

Pros:
- Form factor of the Zune device
- Build quality
- Great screen
- Very good audio quality
- Reasonable, not great battery life

Cons:
- Proprietary Zune PC software
- Battery life could be better
- Zune software forces you to use the device the way Microsoft 'thinks' you should use it -- no exceptions
- Proprietary USB and power cable

I have a very large music collection, consisting of vinyl LPs, CDs, and digital audio files (MP3, FLAC, APE, etc). The Zune software INSISTS on doing things it's way -- if you have your own album art, if the ID3 tags aren't perfect, GOOD LUCK. The player will not allow you to display your catalog in a hierarchical folder list, which is how I have my music organized. Furthermore, the software will not play the tracks in the correct order if the ID3 tags have errors or are not in the exact format the Zune expects. After months of trying to manually fix my collection to make the Zune happy, I gave up and started creating playlists to force the Zune to play what I want, in the order that I wanted. This also takes a lot of time -- by now, my patience started running a little thin. I bought this thing to be convenient for ME, not Microsoft. The battery indicator displays a full charge until the battery is about 20 minutes from being completely dead. I've had it die unexpectedly on numerous occasions, for this reason. Due to the unit being completely locked down, you cannot use it as a USB host -- ie: you cannot use it as an external drive. The video playback works well enough, and the screen is awesome, but the Zune is very picky as to file formats and resolutions. If you do not convert files to conform to these requirements (time consuming), the player will either a) not recognize the files, or b) recognize but not play the files. Figuring this out will also take lots of your free time -- which we all have a lot of, according to Microsoft. After a while, you will give up completely, as I did.

I have been using my Zune primarily as a portable music machine, mostly in my car for commuting. With all of the problems I've had organizing, syncing, and playing my music, I have reached the point of looking around for another player. The form factor of the unit itself is really nice -- it's the perfect size, it's really well made, the screen is gorgeous, but the software is, quite frankly, typical MS garbage. You would think that the largest software maker in the world would have figured out by now how to make usable software -- go figure. I sent them an email regarding my problems, and received an automated reply, with no follow-up. Seems like the feeling is mutual -- I'm tired of them as much as they're tired of me. I have an 8 GB zune and a 120 GB zune and I love them both. I have had Ipods in the past but I love the Zune because of the larger screen. i owned the original zune 30 then bought an ipod 80 then chose to go back to the zune 120 for a few reasons. 1. i listen to FM radio and the ipod didnt have one. 2 i watch video podcasts and the screen on the zune is WAY better for watching video than the ipods screen given that its much bigger and widescreen. 3 the zune pass is THE best way to get music online. the catalog is just as big as itunes, only you can download all you want for $15/mo. (it should be said that whatever you download is DRM'ed and if yu cancel your subscription you wont be able to play anything you downloaded. except that you can keep 10 songs a month that arent DRM'ed.)

given that, i am very happy with my purchase. there is plenty of room for my entire music collection, i download every new album the day it comes out and never have to pick and choose what to put on or not.
the player itself is a bit on the big side, taller and thicker than the ipods but it does have a bigger screen. the battery life is good, i listen maybe 12hrs a day and never run out. the player interface is simple to use, very intuitive and easy to pick right up and use. the touch pad could be a bit more responsive but that is a small detail.

the zune software is a real big plus. its awesome when it comes to playing and discovering new stuff. the "smart dj" is simmilar to the "genious" playlist feature in itunes only it seems to do a better job at picking songs based on the song you use as the basis for it. the "now playing" screen cycles pictures of whatever artists music is playing and looks great. like i said before, the marketplace is great, full of new and old music.

it isnt to say there isnt a few drawbacks to owning this zune.
the main problem i found is the complete lack of after market support for the zune. there are no cases, cables, speakers to be found anywhere. the only place i found anything was on Ebay and it was cheap Chinese no name stuff. companies don't make much for the zune because its only 1% of the mp3 player market.
another big disappointment was the lack of an EQ feature. the first zune had one (the "rock, pop, rap, classical" level choice). music sounds crisp and clear, but without the EQ, a lot of songs with bass fall flat. even with my best studio monitor headphones the bass was lackingl. some isolating ear buds helped but the EQ feature is needed, in my opinion, to allow peoples different taste in music to sound its best.
the last thing that is a point off of this player is the fact that it is discontinued. Microsoft is no longer making these, although they said they will still support it. this could be good, though, if you can find it for a good price.

in conclusion, i would recommend this zune to people if they needed an fm radio or a biggish screen, or if they are music crazy like me, because of the zune pass for unlimited music. if these things don't seem important, id say stick to the iPod. they dominate the market for a reason, and the support from other companies is massive. i will not go back to iPod, but i am not most people. it all depends on where your priorities lye.Get more detail about Zune 120 GB Video MP3 Player (Black).

I bought the Zune 120 in January of 2009 and it's worked great until now, October 2009.

I think the problem is with the software on the device. I won't go into specifics but basically the Zune jams at times and you must hard boot to get control back. This is annoying.

There are a few good forums out there for Zune users but most posts are just people having the same problems complaining about how Microsoft isn't fixing their problem.

The Zune software is easy to use but if I were going to do it again I would buy the IPOD instead just to make it easy. It is probably worth the extra money just for the support.

I was trying to decide between the 120 zune and iPod, the radio tipped me over even though iPod brought back the 160 the week I ordered. I use it on my motorcycle (one of the reasons I wanted a radio), my car and at work. I have yet to have any problems.
